If Jaguar lovers in the New York City area can think back to the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, they'll surely remember the C-X16 concept car. Well, the concept took one step closer to being a reality. Renamed the Jaguar F-Type, the entry-level sports car will head towards production, and is scheduled for a 2013 release.
Besides the name change, the F-Type made another key switch, morphing in to a roadster from a coupe, while still maintaining the design language laid forth by the prototype a year ago. That doesn't mean the new Jaguar model will stick with being a convertible, however. The automaker says a hardtop coupe of the F-Type could head to production, as well.
Jaguar officials state the F-Type will utilize a new powertrain family, with a new range of engines. While that isn't much in the way of detail, we can tell you that when the F-Type debuted as a concept, it was mated to a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 and "Push to Pass" hybrid technology controlled by a button mounted to the steering wheel that can deliver an additional 92 horsepower, and 173 lb-ft of torque to the already potent 376 hp, 332 lb-ft of torque found on the supercharged engine.
According to Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar Global Brand Director, the F-Type will, "start where the Jaguar XKR-S finishes, even with less power."1 The British carmaker hopes this brings a thrilling driving experience and embodies what they believe to be a true sports car in both purpose and style.
